Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to outline the reception of Winter's law in Balto-Slavic and Indo-European linguistics--from its first presentation in 1976 to the present state of research. According to this law, short Slavic and Baltic vowels became long and acute before non-aspirated voiced stops. The article begins by discussing the scholarly context in which the law was formulated, its original version, its connection with accentuation, and its subsequent extension to diphthongs. It then presents the main objections raised by critics of Winter's law, together with the counterarguments offered by its proponents, and reviews various proposals for modifying the law. The next section describes the current state of scholarship, where the law has gradually attained the status of a broad scholarly consensus, although several details remain debated. The article concludes with a brief account of the presence of Winter's law in lexicographic and etymological literature.
