Summary/Abstract: The paper consists of an Introduction and five sections. In the first section, the author presents several definitions of the scientific interpretation of the Qur’an (at-tafsīr al-ʻilmī) and critically examines them. The second section discusses at-tafsīr al-ʻilmī as a distinct type of tafsīr that emerged in the modern era, although initial considerations of what is now known as the scientific interpretation of the Qur’an were already present in classical or medieval tafsīr. The third section briefly explores the reasons for the emergence of the scientific tafsīr of the Qur’an and presents some views of two thinkers (Aḥmad Khan and ʻAbduh) who played a decisive role in preparing the Muslim mind for its acceptance. The following two sections address the proponents and opponents of the scientific interpretation of the Qur’an, while the final section presents a middle-ground position on this issue, based on several important principles (Al-Qaraḍāwī). In the Conclusion, the author offers his final reflections in the form of several theses.
