Summary/Abstract: Throughout its history, Srebrenica has endured significant human losses that have shaped the life of the town, its community, and society. Although most widely known for the tragic events and genocide of 1995, the population of Srebrenica was also affected by earlier military conflicts, including the First World War, during which many local residents were mobilized and lost their lives on the battlefields of war-torn Europe. This study examines the military casualties from Srebrenica using archival sources, primarily the Loss Lists (Verlustliste) of the War Ministry of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, aiming to document the losses and understand their impact on local demographics and social structure. A total of 828 soldiers from Srebrenica and the surrounding areas were recorded, including 304 killed or deceased, 357 wounded, and 167 captured, of whom the place of internment is confirmed for 123 prisoners. The analysis highlights the distribution of casualties by age, with the highest concentration among men born between 1884 and 1894, reflecting the strong impact of the war on the most active generations. The study also traces the geographical distribution of prisoners of war, dominated by the Eastern Front, particularly Russia, followed by Serbia, Italy, Romania, and France. By providing a systematic overview of military casualties, this research contributes to the historiography of Srebrenica during the First World War, offers valuable data for genealogical research, and helps preserve the collective memory of the local population affected by the Great War.
