Summary/Abstract: This article explores the life and legacy of Hadži Hafiz Mustafa ef. Kenović, a respected but largely forgotten imam and hafiz originally from Rapatnica, near Srebrenik. The inspiration for writing the article came during a visit to the Grličića Brdo cemetery in Sarajevo, where Kenović’s grave is located. The author describes the research process and personal motivation behind shedding light on Kenović’s multifaceted life, which included roles as imam, muallim (religious teacher), hatib (preacher of Friday sermons), and public speaker. Born in 1887, Mustafa ef. Kenović pursued his education despite the absence of formal educational institutions in his native region. He began his studies at a madrasa in Gračanica. While many details of his early life, including information about his family, remain unknown, it is known that he furthered his education in Istanbul. There, he became acquainted with the Young Turk Revolution and mastered Arabic, Turkish, and Persian. Over the years, Kenović served in various cities throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, including Gračanica, Jablanica, Sarajevo, Maglaj, Doboj, and Bijeljina. His lifelong commitment to education and community is evident through his pedagogical work and his active participation in religious and cultural life. He maintained a close relationship with the prominent Islamic reformer Džemaludin ef. Čaušević and played a role in preserving religious manuscripts. Despite his significant contributions, many aspects of his life remain insufficiently documented, including his early accomplishments and family background. Mustafa ef. Kenović passed away in 1952 and was laid to rest in Sarajevo. This article aims to offer a modest contribution to preserving the memory of a man whose name deserves to be remembered, presenting a comprehensive overview of his life’s work and the lasting impression he left on his community.
