Summary/Abstract: This study deals with absolute qualifying and relational adjectives in the Bulgarian language, which, according to the grammatical literature, belong to categories that are, in principle, not subject to gradation. However, gradation is increasingly observed in spoken language. The growing number of graded forms is interpreted as a manifesta-tion of the tendency towards analyticism in contemporary Bulgarian. The factors mo-tivating gradation are both lexical and stylistic-pragmatic, since speakers use graded adjectives to convey their evaluation – sometimes highly emotional – of the subject under discussion. The figurative use of both relational and absolute qualifying adjectives is analysed in detail, alongside the transition of relational adjectives into the class of qualifying ones, which underlies the possibility of grading both types of adjectives.
