Summary/Abstract: This study depicts an unfortunate episode of events that occurred in the 1930s of the interwar period in Moldova on the right side of the Prut, but also in the left side, that is, Bessarabia. The emphasis is on what happened in a small and quiet town in Moldova, Piatra-Neamț. The context was the resistance and propaganda against the calendar corrected by the BOR since 1924. In numerous villages in the interwar counties of Baia and Neamț there was an attitude of rejection of the corrected calendar against the background of the propaganda of the so-called vagabond monks who virulently challenged the official Church. The phenomenon was also maintained by some of the politicians of the time, obviously for electoral interests. In Bessarabia the situation was even more dramatic, both because of the legacy of the Russian Orthodox Church that used the Julian calendar, but also because of propagandists such as priest Climovici, the correspondent of monk Glicherie from the Neamț and Suceava areas. The violence in Piatra-Neamț is highlighted by the testimonies of the protagonists that are in the National Archives of Romania, General Inspectorate of the Gendarmerie collection; the National Archives of Romania, Neamț County Service of the National Archives, “Neamț County Prefecture” collection (1936); the newspapers “Înainte”, “Iașul” or “Universul”, but also in the works signed by Radu Petre Mureșan. The picture of the events is captured using local archival sources, which faithfully reproduce what happened in September 1936, when a group of stylists from Valea Muntelui tried to forcibly release some vagrant monks whom they believed were detained in police custody in the town at the foot of Pietricica.
