Summary/Abstract: The study examines how interest in teachers’ attire is reflected in their own recollections. Most historical sources consulted consist of memoirs or journal notes written by teachers of the past, in which this seemingly frivolous topic persistently captured the authors’ attention. The proposed analysis demonstrates why putting together and displaying an appropriate outfit was so essential for teachers; which aspects of the attire were emphasised differently by gender, location, or historical period; how teachers managed to cope with expenses for a pristine and even elegant appearance; the past and present public perceptions of teachers’ image; and the differences between self-image and external evaluations.
