Summary/Abstract: This study is trying to build a new historical representation of the Romanian school reform in 1948, apart from the two opposite well known historiographical discourses – the radical positive version, imposed by the communist propaganda, and the highly negative one, openly adopted after 1989. The analysis insists upon the tacit continuities that allowed the educational system to survive in a time of radical changes of the political regimes, in those years of war and foreign occupation, followed by a severe economical crisis. It also stresses the administrative pressures that imposed countless interdictions, exclusions, omissions, and some sort of innovations, long before the publishing of the reforming decree in August 1948. The research is largely based upon documents from the national and regional historical archive of the public school administration.
