Summary/Abstract: The Church in the World or the eschatological image of Christian Communities and the Vocation for Lasting Peace. The waves of emigration in modern times, the presence of a strong Orthodox diaspora in traditionally non-Orthodox countries, especially in the West, and to a lesser extent the missionary activities of some Orthodox churches, have raised major ecclesiological-canonical-pastoral questions for the Orthodox tradition. Most of the „local churches” or autocephalous Orthodox national churches have now become de facto „universal” churches, primarily due to their presence in diaspora in every part of the globe. The ecclesiology of the local church can come into conflict with this phenomenon of universalization. The lives of Orthodox diaspora communities of different ethnic origins and linguistic expressions overlap in metropolitan areas, most of them still retaining affiliation with their mother churches, and some, like the Orthodox Church in America, aspiring to create new local churches in new national cultural contexts.
