Summary/Abstract: This paper traces the most significant moments in Wilhelm Filderman’s biography. As the Jewish community leader during some intense and harsh moments in Romanian history, namely the Holocaust and the installation of the communist dictatorship, he played a vital role in political negotiations and humanitarian campaigns. By using his diary and publications of the time, this analysis provides insight into his efforts and sacrifices and the apologetic manner in which a part of society perceived them.
