CHILDREN’S EDUCATION AS A HUMAN RIGHT

Summary/Abstract: Children’s education as a human right. Human rights defenders believe that all children have an inalienable right to education. This assertion is based primarily on two premises. First, human rights advocates support the right to education because they believe that if children receive basic primary education, they will likely be literate and able to do arithmetic, and will have the basic social and life skills necessary to secure employment, be active members of a peaceful community, and lead fulfilling lives. Second, human rights advocates recognize that despite this recognition of education as a right in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, many children do not even receive a basic education. This discrepancy between the positive recognition of the right to education and the negative reality faced by many children has led human rights defenders to conclude that education should be considered a human rights issue, on a par with the right to food or the right to freedom.
