Summary/Abstract: In many situations, man no longer understands his ontology, that is, his own nature. Illness and suffering often appear to him as needs, essential constitutive parts of his initial given. In such a logic, it can be admitted that God is the creator of an imperfect man, whose destination is an inexplicable death incompatible with any type of anthropological-theological discourse. On the other hand, contemporary man becomes a tireless hunter of apparent psycho-somatic balance. The illusion that illness can be defeated exclusively through neutral procedures can be dangerous when the spiritual universe of man is ignored. As a whole, man cannot be reduced only to his body and the health of this body. The complex world of human existence requires a holistic approach, which should not remain tributary to a reductionist materialism. Saint Maximus the Confessor offers us several directions of anthropological reflection that can no longer be ignored in the context of today's world.
