Disaster victim identification represents a complex interdisciplinary activity involving criminalists, forensic pathologists, geneticists, anthropologists, odontologists and other specialists. The paper analyses the theoretical definition of criminalistics and its relationship to the system of forensic sciences, including differences between the Anglo-Saxon and continental approaches to these disciplines. Particular attention is paid to forensic biomechanics as a relatively new field contributing to the reconstruction of events, the analysis of human movement and the assessment of injury mechanisms. The article also describes the main phases of the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) process and highlights the importance of ethical, legal and psychosocial aspects of this activity. Finally, the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation and technological development for further improvement of identification procedures is emphasized.
