Summary/Abstract: On 21 August 1921, Józef Piłsudski, the marshal of the Polish army and the main politician in Poland those days, pinned the Virtuti Militari cross on the veterans of the January Uprising. The ceremony took place on the slopes of the Warsaw Citadel, which is a symbol of the suffering of the Polish nation. Few soldiers of the Uprising received this most significant Polish military decoration. Artur Dzierzbicki was one of them. The author of this article presents Dzierzbicki’s combat trail as well as tries to show – based on the 19th-century press and vital records – the life of this outstanding Pole from the Kalisz region.
