Summary/Abstract: There is a roundabout called “The soldiers of Polish January Uprising”in Lodz city. Few people from Lodz and even less visitors know why it is calledabout. What does the name of roundabout have to do with the place where it islocated? There was a forest called Grabinka in that place in 1863 where soldiers andcivil activists of the January Uprising were shot. One of the victims was a captain of the insurgents, Ian Birtus. On 4th of December close to Szadek, between vil-lages Kłoniszew and Jeżów, a skirmish took place as a result of which a sub‑unit ofthe Polish National Gendarmerie commanded by captain Ian Birtus was defeated.The author of the article will try to present the last moments of the unit to thereaders, bring closer the figure of Jan Birtus and commemorate the soldiers ofthe National Gendarmerie.
