Summary/Abstract: Thomas Mann’s book The Magic Mountain refers to magic already in its title, without immediately revealing why. On the one hand, because mountains are natural places that appear to be independent of any magic, and on the other hand, because the events described in the novel take place in a sanatorium, in other words, a scientific place that is hostile to any magic. The purpose of this study is to show how this book may be read as a work of mythical thought and magic, even though it also presents itself as a text of demystification. Mythical thinking is approached from several angles: first, trivially, as a form of non-scientific and false thinking; second, as a discourse that tells us the truth about European civilization; and third, as a way of thinking about the origins of time. It is these three contradictory aspects that we aim to highlight.
