Summary/Abstract: Few objects seem less susceptible to temptation than the Perpignan tramway described by Claude Simon in his book. And yet, it is perhaps possible to read Le tramway as a text of temptation, in which all the aspirations and desires of the early 20th century industrial era seem to be ironically concentrated. Temptation of the object, on the one hand. But also, temptation in Claude Simon’s way of writing to constantly refer to other authors (Baudelaire and Proust, for example), other books (La recherche du temps perdu, Gulliver’s Travels, Les fleurs du mal) and other texts–in addition to the literary ones–such as the advertising texts invading the city. The aim of this research is to analyse the way temptation runs through Claude Simon’s Le tramway and the way the new novel (le nouveau roman), as a new form, may be itself seen as a writing about temptation.
