Summary/Abstract: The canon—or list of books—of the New Testament, in its current form comprising 27 writings, gradually took shape over the course of the first four centuries after the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. We know that the 27 books were written between the years 44 and 98. The great majority of them were composed with a specific purpose, arising from situations within newly founded Christian communities, in order to clarify aspects of Christian faith and teaching; some were addressed not only to communities but also to particular individuals.
