Summary/Abstract: Equivalence is a key principle in translation studies, involving the challenge of conveying meaning from the source text to the target text while ensuring that the intent, style, and cultural significance are preserved. The idea of equivalence occupies a pivotal role in translation studies, yet it has sparked considerable debate among translators regarding its nature, definition, and relevance. This paper aims to critically assess the most significant theories of equivalence advanced by key scholars in the field. By presenting these theories, the paper seeks to elucidate the evolution of the concept. Ultimately, by analyzing these theoretical advancements, the paper concludes that the perception of the utility of equivalence in the translation process is contingent on the translators' individual perspectives.
