Summary/Abstract: This study examines the phonetic features of Gala Galaction’s prose within the broader context of the standardization and normalization of the modern Romanian literary language during the first half of the twentieth century. The author’s literary activity coincides with the consolidation of supradialectal standards, shaped by major orthographic reforms that established the foundations of modern Romanian orthography based primarily on the phonetic principle. From a diachronic perspective, the analysis highlights both conditioned and unconditioned phonetic changes, as well as sporadic phonetic phenomena, as reflected in Galaction’s prose. Particular attention is paid to the interaction between normative forms and expressive phonetic variants – some of which are specific to the Muntenian region – alongside archaic, popular, and regional elements. These phonetic and graphic choices illustrate the writer’s conscious exploitation of linguistic resources, contributing to the distinctiveness of his literary style.
