Summary/Abstract: This study explores the essential role of translation in the development of Romanian cultural and linguistic identity. From its earliest stages, translation has been closely tied to the emergence of writing in the vernacular, providing some of the first testimonies of the Romanian language in use. By mediating religious, literary, and cultural texts, translators not only enriched and standardized the Romanian literary language but also facilitated contact with broader intellectual traditions. In doing so, they contributed to the consolidation of national consciousness and the affirmation of Romanian as a language of culture. Translations thus emerge as key instruments in both linguistic development and the shaping of a collective cultural identity.
