Summary/Abstract: Barbara Bojarska, alongside Włodzimierz Jastrzębski and Jan Sziling, ranks among the foremost historians studying the German occupation of Gdańsk Pomerania during the years 1939–1945. Her two seminal monographs, on the extermination of the Polish intelligentsia in the autumn of 1939 and on the crimes committed in Piaśnica, have become part of the essential body of scholarship on this subject. Professionally affiliated with the Western Institute (Pol. Instytut Zachodni) in Poznań, Bojarska devoted the majority of her research to documenting the extermination of the civilian population in the early months of the German occupation within the Reichsgau Danzig-West Prussia with particular attention to the operations of the Selbstschutz Westpreussen. During the 1960s, she located surviving witnesses to these atrocities and meticulously recorded their testimonies. Her pioneering studies laid the foundations for subsequent investigations, which continue to develop her legacy. In contemporary historiography, the scope, significance, and distinctiveness of the German crimes in Gdańsk Pomerania in 1939 have been underscored through the introduction of a new term: the Pomeranian Crime of 1939.
