Summary/Abstract: Defining, in ancient philosophical ethics, health and chastity of the mind, sophrosyne aims to achieve dispassion (apatheia) as purification (cleansing) of the passionate part of the soul, towards the fulfillment of the natural work of the mind towards contemplation (theoria – the vision of God). Understood as reflection, meditation, deep thought (philosophizing), sophrosyne aims at knowing values in themselves, that is, what is eternal and immutable, synthesized in Truth, Goodness, and Beauty, thus becoming the key that opens the door to human culture and civilization... Taken from spithe Philocalic tradition to convey the new spiritual philosophy that leads to the perfection of human nature, sophrosyne takes on its own meanings, aiming to restore the image of God in man, which leads to „sharing in the divine nature” (2 Pet 1:4). Sosyne is achieved through reason enlightened by „faith working through love” (Gal 5:6), promoted and strengthened by the power and work of divine grace, to cultivate and affirm the mentality and behavior as life in Christ through the Holy Spirit. Expressed through virginity and chastity, as complete devotion (body and soul) to God’s saving love, sophrosyne, as humble and merciful agape love, is in the Philokalia „the universal (common) name of all virtues.”
