Summary/Abstract: In Banat at the beginning of the 20th century, the national support action can be divided into two distinct periods. The first is the period before the outbreak of the war, when the public discourse of the hierarchs of Arad and Caransebeș, and of other clergymen, was moderate yet firm in defense of the church’s autonomy and other rights of the Romanian nation. Here we can talk about the influence of the Church in the resumption of the active politics of the Romanian National Party, the support of nationalist candidates in the Hungarian parliamentary elections before the War, the interventions for the introduction of universal suffrage, and the steps taken to remove all political and cultural restrictions imposed on the Romanian people. The second period encompasses the years of the Great War and is characterized by the expansion of Romanian national sentiments, on the one hand, and by increasingly punitive measures imposed by the state authorities, on the other. The present study specifies some aspects of the Romanian national support activity promoted by the bishops of Arad and Caransebeș.
