The Treasury of the theatrical art: 75 years of The Museum of Theatrical Arts of Serbia

Summary/Abstract: The Museum of Theatre Arts of Serbia, as an umbrella institution, has been preserving and studying materials about our theatre history and present for 75 years. Through its diverse activities – exhibition, publishing and educational – it presents materials as the results of the scientific and research work of curators. Thus, the cultural legacy within the framework of expertly selected exhibition and publishing topics becomes part of the education of theatre enthusiasts and museum lovers. Numerous joint or individual projects are realized through inter-institutional cooperation. By exchanging materials and knowledge, and through guest appearances, the Museum presents its exhibitions and publishing activities throughout Serbia, the region and abroad. The museum’s journal, «Teatron», was launched in 1974 and today, as a journal for theatre arts, it is on the official list as the leading national journal of category M51. One of the most significant projects of the Museum since 2001 is Teatroslov, the first unique theatre database. By interweaving theatre and museology, the Museum is modernizing its work, developing digital communications that represent a key activity today. It has been awarded many times for its overall activity and contribution to the research of theatre history and the professional processing of museum funds. In 2025, the Museum celebrated 75 years of work with an exhibition that presented a selection of the most valuable, most significant and most representative diverse materials in its heritage, as well as a monograph that reminds and points out its history, importance and development which keeps the step with the value scales throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.
