Summary/Abstract: As St. Anthony pointed out, in the consensus of philosophical thought, right reckoning is "the mother and guardian of all virtues“. Being the mother of all the virtues, right reckoning is at the beginning of the ascetical life, as discernment or gift of discernment. As a virtue of thought, of conscience, or of judgment oriented according to the principles of the Gospel of Christ, right reckoning determines, as it sees fit, the promotion of temperance as the middle way between two extremes (excess and insufficiency), harmful to the spiritual life. As a guardian of the virtues, right reckoning has a dynamic and creative character, being the „kingly way“ which determines, with great prudence and spiritual skill, the surest of the many ways leading to holiness of life, with the role of keeping the mind and heart in constant „attention to oneself“ (prosohe), organically and functionally linked with prayer (proseuhe). As a grace of the distinction of spirits, discernment, as a gift of the Holy Spirit, proved its efficacy in the life of the early Church. The diakritic and dioratic fathers cultivated it as showing aof the thoughts and knowledge of the will of God.
