Summary/Abstract: Tourism plays a crucial role in Bulgaria’s economic development, contributing to employment, investments, and foreign currency revenues. In this context, tourism policy is a fundamental factor in shaping a sustainable and competitive environment. This study analyzes the development of tourism policy in Bulgaria by tracing its key phases, regulatory framework, and strategic directions that determine the future growth of the sector. The article examines the historical evolution of tourism policies from the era of centralized economy to contemporary market-oriented strategies, emphasizing the role of the European Union and international institutions in shaping the regulatory environment. Furthermore, it assesses the impact of global trends, including digitalization, sustainable development, and the growing importance of alternative tourism products. The methodological approach includes a comparative analysis of strategic documents, legislation, and statistical data to identify key challenges and opportunities in the tourism sector. The results indicate that Bulgaria has significant potential for tourism development but faces challenges such as seasonality, a shortage of qualified workforce, and the need for more efficient destination management. In conclusion, recommendations are made to improve tourism policy, including strengthening public-private partnerships, increasing investments in digitalization, and promoting sustainable practices. The proposals aim to support the establishment of a more competitive and sustainable tourism sector in Bulgaria in alignment with contemporary global requirements.
