Summary/Abstract: The paper registers and analyzes Slavonic-Serbian literary linguistic elements found in the letters of Petar II Petrović Njegoš written in the period between 1830 and 1841 (according to the edition of Dušan Vuksan from 1940). In addition to establishing the dependence of the use of literary linguistic influence on sociolinguistic factors (social stratification of participants in the correspondence) and the thematic structural organization of the text, the paper also analyzes the degree of presence of these elements on the chronological axis. Special attention is devoted to establishing a structural model (medieval or modern) to which Njegoš’s letters belong. On the chronological axis the language of Njegoš’s letters evolves from Slavonic-Serbian (with the ijekavian folk component) into the Dositejan type of language since 1833. The appearance not only of Slavonic-Serbian elements but also adequate literary patterns, set formulae and clichés is directly dependent on sociolinguistic factors (social stratification of participants in the correspondence) and the thematic structural organization of the text. Since Njegoš in a way diverges from componential principles of medieval legal and business letters, he breaks away from the tradition and turns towards European features of this genre, thus showing a certain innovativeness.
