Summary/Abstract: This paper discusses the composition of 13 Early Byzantine copper-based coins (6th – beginning of 7th c. AD) recovered during archaeological excavations at Istros (Romania). The measurements were conducted using a non-destructive analytical technique, namely X-Ray fluorescence (XRF). The main aim of this study is to determine the compositional clusters and the alloying materials used in the case of these coins, and to compare them with data obtained on similar items from other parts of the Early Byzantine Empire.
