Summary/Abstract: After Belgrade Metropolitan Mihajlo’s (1704–1711) death, his creditors tried to charge their invested funds and interest from the two later metropolitans of Belgrade, Parthenius (1711–1713) and Moses Petrović (1713–1718). On the other hand, the late bishop’s son-in-law, a certain Jovanče, kept the inheritance of the deceased bishop and thus violated the privileges of the patriarch. Protecting the church’s property, Serbian Patriarch Athanasius I (1711–1712) presented these two cases before the Kadi of Belgrade and submitted several petitions to the central government in Istanbul. While litigating with the late bishop’s creditors, Patriarch Athanasius I failed to settle his tax obligations to the state for three fiscal years, jeopardizing the Serbian Church autocephaly. The appendix presents the content of eight orders issued by the financial administration in Istanbul in connection with this case.
