Summary/Abstract: The article examines problems with terminology in New Music. It focuses on the role of the concepts used as a kind of key through which the artistic organisation of the musical work, based on the specific historical and stylistic features, is subjected to ‘decoding’. The main problem of the conceptual apparatus today is that unlike the music of previous eras, which was based on a single syntax and grammatical rules that determine the terminology for its study, after the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, a process of fragmentation of different “grammars” began – a phenomenon that unfolded with all its strength in the second half of the 20th century. In this regard, the various methods of composition are also considered: Twelve-tone organisation, modality, microintervality, pluralism (collage and montage techniques), accidental composition, and rhizomatic (labyrinthic) organisation. The question of the different interpretations of the concepts of modern – avant-garde – New Music in the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as the inclusion of the metaphor in the conceptual apparatus, is also raised.
