Summary/Abstract: The focus of the essay is on some methodological problems when considering art and music on the threshold of two centuries. In addition to some peculiarities in the composition process of four important composers (György Ligeti, Alfred Schnittke, Helmut Lachenmann, Adriana Hölszky) and in the light of the leading ideas of modern philosophy and aesthetics, an attempt is made to put the idioms of our era under the microscope.
