Summary/Abstract: The question of “internal emigration” in the former communist countries of Europe is examined using examples from two operas by the important Bulgarian composers Konstantin Iliev and Lazar Nikolov. Similar to Paul Hindemith in Mathis the Painter, in Iliev's Master from Bojana (1962), the inspiration came from a medieval legend, and at the heart of the drama is the problem of the freedom of the creators under dogmatic violence. In Nikolov's Bound Prometeus (1972), the main character is to be understood as a symbol of protest against tyranny and oppression, and this can be interpreted politically in all times, even more so in a communist regime.
