Summary/Abstract: In this study, an attempt has been made to describe a situation defined as a syndrome of institutional schizophrenia. The author – referring to media reports, statements of highly functional individuals in academia, and many years of her own professional experience – reconstructs the problematic situation in the field of Polish higher education along with the implementation of the Act on Higher Education of 20 November 2018. In this study, the author demonstrates that as a result of legislative changes in the institutions with a clear axiological identity forming the core of their brand, a new academic quality has been introduced, in which the measure became point quantity and market competition. Consequently – in an institution with a long tradition of market continuity – a split occurred in the field of the traditional axiological core. The author uses the term institutional schizophrenia syndrome referring to the findings of Viktor E. Frankl (psychiatrist, psychotherapist and researcher), who indicated that in the psychology of schizophrenia, there is a change in human perception. A person stops feeling like a subject, becoming a “pure experience of being an object” in a situation perceived as oppressive.
