he influence of corpus design on the quantitative results of a grammatical corpus investigation

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study is to investigate how corpus design affects the quantitative dimension of a grammatical corpus research. For this purpose, CO DIS (a corpus of written Italian which allows the researcher to adapt its structure to his or her needs) was used. Six projects of corpus design were prepared (five modelled on existing corpora: COR IS (Italian), National Corpus of Polish, British National Corpus, Russian National Corpus, FidaPL US (Slovenian), and one containing all text groups in equal parts). Exemplary problems covering different grammar areas such as word form variation, nominal suffixes, analytical and synthetic comparatives, use of articles, use of moods or position of clitics were investigated. The obtained results indicate that while each corpus model confirms the same general tendencies in the investigated areas (e.g. prevalent forms), the figures may differ consistently. The difference between the obtained percentage values is usually less significant.
