Against “Postsecularism,” in Favor of Postsecular Humanities: Positions and Concepts

Summary/Abstract: The article critically examines the phenomenon of “postsecularism” and the postsecularturn, as well as their associated ideological and theoretical concepts and positions.The authors identify the problems and aporias in which the concept of “postsecularity”becomes involved. Moreover, the article offers suggestions for advancing postsecularresearch, aiming to develop the practice of postsecular humanities as not only sensitisingto the discursiveness of the religious/secular distinction but also moving beyond thebinary and binarising cognitive paradigm in (Western) academia. The proposed approachreflects a form of threshold thinking, which, from a postsecular perspective, couldconsider how academic practices (mis)conceive phenomena associated with the religiousand situated in the context of Central and Eastern Europe, among other places.
