Summary/Abstract: Gaius Vettius Aquilinus Iuvencus, a Christian poet who lived during the reign of the emperor Constantine the Great, is the founder of the literary genre of biblical epic. However, his work known as Evangeliorum libri quattuor is more than a mere paraphrase of the Gospel. It also contains numerous exegetical additions by which the poet adapts the text of the original to the understanding of the 4th century Roman aristocracy. Our article focuses on the exegetical additions which expand on the idea of fate showing how Iuvencus uses fatalism as an apologetic tool to prove the inevitability of Christ’s crucifiction.
