How new street names were created in post-war Miedzyrzecz?

Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with changes in the street names of Meseritz/ Międzyrzecz. The first step of the analysiswas a semantic classification of German street names as it was thought that the semantics affected theprocess of changes in the names of streets. The analysis showed that some of the street names weretranslated, the greater part, however, was completely changed. The process of new naming was one ofthe measures of Polonization of the areas. Most street names in Międzyrzecz were cleared of any Germantraces. Even the street names of a neutral character were translated barely in 50 per cent.
