Summary/Abstract: In the second half of the twentieth century, the Cold War waged by both sides of the Iron Curtain was not merely an economic, scientific, or cultural confrontation, but a competition for global public image as well, with both sides asserting that they promoted the most appropriate regimes for guaranteeing human rights and citizens' welfare. Socialist regimes insisted on the notion that social rights are of paramount importance in society, and that Marxist-based political regimes are the only ones capable of genuinely guaranteeing these rights. Historical perspective allows us today, in the twenty-first century, to impartially asses whether these assertions were supported by mechanisms for safeguarding and effective implementation or whether they were merely lines of public discourse compatible with the official ideology of socialist states, yet without concrete application in the actual economy.
