Summary/Abstract: In the present context of globalisation, communication seems to be the key of human interaction. An important field where communication plays an essential role is conference interpreting. That is why teaching communication as a discipline has become a real challenge nowadays both in specialised schools and in the departments which train interpreters and translators. In this article we will speak about the loss of information in the process of the consecutive translation and we will try to identify several possible situations and solutions. We will start by a definition of the communication process and its elements and will continue with aspects related to teaching communication as a discipline and the barriers that can occur in human communication and cause the loss of information. Our paper has been conceived in the narrower context of training conference interpreters in the Applied Modern Languages Department of the Faculty of Letters of the Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca. We will discuss some practical cases we met throughout our teaching experience and will present some examples of frequent mistakes made by students, followed by the analysis of such mistakes and the solutions found together in class in order to improve communication. All throughout the years, experience has shown us that the university curriculum has to be continuously improved and updated according to the course of events worldwide, to students’ preferences and abilities, and to their initial training. Thus, the course and seminar of Communication we teach, as well as the practical course on Consecutive translations given by our department, have become a continuous challenge both for teachers and students.
