Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the right of Muslim women to social engagement and participation in the social and political activities of the environment in which they live. The involvement of women in the social, political, and even economic life of a society was for a long time an unfamiliar concept throughout much of the Muslim world. Even today, in some Muslim circles, such participation is still viewed as undesirable or unacceptable. It is important to note, however, that the number of Muslim women actively involved in social affairs and political activism remains small and insufficient in proportion to their actual number, and the professional and academic competencies of many women in both the East and the West. This important issue will be explored through the lens of the legal opinions (fatwas) and rulings of the European Council for Fatwa and Research, drawing upon the primary sources of Islam — the Qur’an and the Sunnah — as well as the views of contemporary Islamic scholars and institutions of Islamic jurisprudence.
