Summary/Abstract: The events of the 1848–1849 revolution and war of independence did not leave the churches untouched. In the case of the Roman Catholic dioceses of Hungary and Transylvania, it is clearly observable that the processes of political and civil transformation, as well as democratization, contributed significantly to the increasingly frequent formulation of radical ecclesiastical proposals from the spring of 1848 onward.
