Summary/Abstract: In Wierna rzeka, Echa leśne, and Rozdzióbią nas kruki, wrony…, Stefan Żeromski depicts the January Uprising through a complex organisation of the soundscape, in which the past collides with the present. The dominant elements are not articulated words, but voices of pain: groans, murmurs, and sobs – haunting and unsettling. Equally constant are the sounds of nature and battle – the pounding of horses’ hooves or the rhythmic strikes of tools – evoking the image of combat. The acoustic sphere becomes a space of trauma, disrupting the order of both human and natural life. In each of these works, the struggle is portrayed as a disturbance of sonic harmony, emphasised by the omnipresent silence and the tension inherent in the act of listening.
