Summary/Abstract: RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The research objective of this article is to discuss the problem of malematuration in the prose of Zygmunt Niedźwiecki.THE RESEARCH PROBLEMS AND METHODS: The dominant research method is studies onmasculinity. In discussing the crisis of masculinity that became evident at the end of the 19th cen-tury, the author focuses on the concept of lost illusions and the motif of searching for happinessand fulfillment.THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The adulthood of Zygmunt Niedźwiecki’s charactersdoes not correspond to their maturity, because in many cases they seek happiness above all, andtheir life choices are mainly driven by their egoism.RESEARCH RESULTS: The in-depth analysis leads to the conclusion that men at the end of the19th century are lost individuals, searching for their place in the world and redefining masculinityand the social roles assigned to them.CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS AND APPLICABLE VALUE OF RESEARCH:The analyzed short stories by Zygmunt Niedźwiecki may become a contribution to a broader per-spective on the work of the writer and his contemporaries in the context of social roles imposed bysociety and the beginning of the process of retraining the patriarchal concept of the world.
