Summary/Abstract: The study offers an analysis of Za późno, a one-act play by Władysław S. Reymont – the first of his dramas to be staged in a theatre. The play was written in the spring of 1899 and premiered on stage on 28 April 1899. Although never published in print, the work has survived in three handwritten versions. These manuscripts are examined in the present article through the lens of genetic criticism, which makes it possible to trace the changes introduced in successive drafts and reconstruct the stages of Reymont’s creative process. By analysing the play and its reception, the article also seeks to explore the reasons behind the author’s ‘theatrical unfulfilment’.
