Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the Slovak surname Hevier, also borne by the Slovak poet and artist Daniel Hevier who recently mentioned some hypotheses concerning its origin in a social network video. The author discusses the pros and cons of two already proposed explanations which connect the surname etymologically with: (1) Slovak haviar ‘miner’ (from Early New High German hau̯ er ‘id.’); (2) Slovak hever ‘device used for lifting; wine siphon’ (from Middle, Early New High German hever ‘id.’). However, it is also possible to corroborate the tradition persisting in Daniel Hevier’s family according to which their surname (attested since 1804) was brought to Slovakia by a deserter from Napoleon’s army; cf. the evidence for the surname Hevier in France (mostly documented in Normandy, Aquitaine and Paris; see the Geneanet database). The question undoubtedly requires further genealogical research.
