MARGARET THATCHER‘S VISIT TO BULGARIA IN 1971

Summary/Abstract: In 1971 Margaret Thatcher, then Secretary of State for Education and Science, paid an official visit to Bulgaria. She was the first British minister to come to the country. Her high rank in government determined the importance of the visit. The invitation for the official visit came from the Bulgarian side. During this period, it was important for Bulgarian diplomacy to host high-level state visitors. The aim was to show Bulgaria‘s achievements under the rule of the Bulgarian Communist Party while expanding international contacts with the Western countries. Thatcher‘s visit was a successful step in this direction.
