Summary/Abstract: Variability is one of the most significant categories of any language, and it can be analyzed on different linguistic levels. Although linguistic changes are not immediately noticeable, their presence is indeed pervasive. The aim of this paper is to explore the changes that the German language has undergone over time by comparing linguistic and stylistic features in J. W. Goethe’s Die Leiden des jungen Werther (1774) and Bernhard Schlink’s Der Vorleser (1995). The analysis of these two works, written in different historical periods, compares the use of formal and informal expressions, indirect meanings, and implicit messages that appear in both texts. Considering that these are literary works from the 18th and 19th centuries, this paper also includes an analysis of the semantic changes of certain words, the characteristics of syntactic structures, and the ways in which characters address one another.
