Summary/Abstract: Documentarily attested on 23rd September 1403, Giurgiu is, from a historical point of view, one of the oldest Romanian settlements on the Danube. In the 15th century, Giurgiu was occupied, for the first time, by the Ottoman Empire, evolving for almost three centuries as a city with oriental and Ottoman specifics. After the Russian–Turkish war from 1826 to 1829, the city of Giurgiu was reintegrated into Wallachia. In a short historical period, of about a century, the city of Giurgiu experienced a remarkable transformation, rapidly evolving from a marginal settlement under Ottoman administration, with a traditional oriental aspect, into a modern Romanian city, with new public buildings and private ones, modern in architecture and structural design, with various functions, works of Romanian architects and engineers of great professional and academic prestige in the era (architects Petre Antonescu, Nicolae Mihăescu, Grigore Călinescu and State Baloșin, engineers Anghel Saligny, Ion Ionescu-Bizet, Aurel A. Beleș and Liviu I. Ciulley).Less than two hundred years after reintegration into the Romanian state, this city has become relevant, being one of the country’s important cities.
