Summary/Abstract: This article aims to analyse and publish a previously unknown cartographic source relating to the city of Ploiești and the surrounding rural area. The source, with the title from the archival catalogue Plan von Plojesti, 1856, is provided by the Military Archives in Vienna (Kriegsarchive) and was created during the Crimean War, as an unfinished section of the well-known ‛Fligely map’ of Wallachia (1855–1859), which was later published under the title Charta României Meridionale (1864). The plan is drawn to a scale of 1:28,800 on a plate measuring 798 × 485 mm, depicting an area of approximately 160–180 km2, with the city of Ploiești at its centre and 17 villages to the north and south. In terms of technical characteristics, graphic quality, precision, and detail, the plan is superior to other 19th-century cartographic sources for Ploiești. To understand the plan, we have outlined its historical context, technical characteristics and topographical content. We have analysed the relief and vegetation, the hydrographic network and roads, the topography of the city of Ploiești and the neighbouring villages, the location of ecclesiastical and civil institutions, the presence of military and technical objectives, as well as isolated topographical landmarks: fountains, roadside shrines, and centuries-old trees. Overall, this plan serves as a valuable historical and cartographic source. Its documentary potential can be fully explored not only by those interested in local history, but also by researchers in historical geography and cartography, urban history and urban planning, topography, and toponymy.
